The legacy of St. Thomas College, Thrissur - the ancient catholic college in Kerala, can be traced to 1889 when it was founded as an educational institution from the initiatives of Msgr. A. E. Medlycott Ph.D., Fr. John Palocaren, Msgr. John Menacherry, Prof. Joeph Pettah and many like hearted gentlemen who faded away without even disturbing the historians. It's very Motto "Veritas vos Leberabit", translated as Truth will set you free, is a testimony to what it has been standing for, since ages. Apart from its contribution to intellectual and cultural arena, it has responded positively to the nation's independence urge also. It played a major role in the anti-british struggle and during this cause; it went on to welcome The Mahatma into its active and responsive campus on 14th October 1927. In addition to Mahatma Gandhi; Neelam Sanjeev Reddy, Sri Narasimha Rao and Mother Theresa also visited this college in various occasions of significance.
Over the years, college has built-up extensive resources which can cater the needs of more than 3000 students. It has seventeen teaching departments (including the three research departments and nine postgraduate departments) with over 140 teachers, who help the students in formulating their lives. For maintaining quality persistently, it has been accredited with a B++ stature in 2004 by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) - an autonomous organization instituted by the University Grants Commission. During the re-accreditation in September 2010, NAAC accredited it with a mighty A grade (3.58 points out of possible 4.00).
Department of Computer Science
One of the latest additions to its departmental list is the department of computer science, which has its humble beginning in 2001 as an unaided self financing department with the objective of imparting quality education in the field of computer science. Over a decade, it has transformed itself into an aided department that creates an innovative academic environment, with distinctive emphasis on the overall development of students. Besides academic courses and soft skills training, research and innovations are given due importance. With rapidly evolving technology and the continuous need for innovations, the department aspires to reassert the significance of high quality education by producing competent professionals who can shape the destiny of our country.
About the seminar
The shortage of qualified computer science teachers in India indicates a collective need to recruit more students into the teaching field and research. This national seminar is aimed to introduce various research areas to the budding talents and will be lead by eminent professors of the likes of Dr. Samuel Mattathil (Director, Department of Computer Applications, Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies, Tiruvalla), Dr. R. Vijaya Kumar (Director, School of Computer Sciences, M.G. University, Kottayam) and Dr. M. V. Judy, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Sciences and I.T., Amrita School of Arts and Sciences, Kochi. It is thus intended to provide immense benefit to research scholars, students and professionals from the field of computer science. Participation is sought from representatives of academic, industry and government organizations who have an interest in the field. Registration will be restricted to first 60 participants and registration fees will be Rs.100 per delegate.
